Why Your PS5 Wireless Headset Mutes Capture Card Audio
Discover why your PS5 wireless headset is muting your capture card audio. Learn about Sony's strict audio routing restrictions and how it impacts streaming.

Sony designed the PlayStation consoles to severely limit your audio choices, completely cutting off your capture card the second you plug in a headset.
The PlayStation 5 restricts audio routing to exactly one location at a time. The moment an analog headset is connected to a PS5 controller, the console forcibly reroutes all game and voice audio directly to that controller. Consequently, this stops the PS5 game audio from passing through the HDMI cable. Without an audio signal traveling over HDMI, the capture card receives absolutely no sound, leaving your recording dead silent.
The PS5 and the Nintendo Switch 2 support only one audio output at a time. Your audio either travels via HDMI, a USB headset, or the controller itself. It will not split the signal. If a headset is connected to a PS5 or Nintendo Switch 2 controller, all audio will play through the controller and nothing will pass through the recording device.
Connecting a microphone or headset to a game controller, camcorder, or Bluetooth device immediately mutes the audio going to the capture card. This extends to other platforms and specific hardware combinations as well. Connecting a line-out cable from an Xbox Series X controller to an AVerMedia GC553G2 while charging the controller via a cable also mutes the audio.
Wireless headsets present an entirely different hardware roadblock. USB and wireless headsets do not connect through the console controller. Because they bypass the controller entirely, they are not directly compatible with analog bridging solutions like the Elgato Chat Link. If you use the Sony PlayStation Wireless Gold headset, it is compatible with the Elgato Chat Link only when you bypass its wireless functionality and use its included mobile wired cable.
Before you can even attempt to route your audio, you must clear the hardware copy protection blocking the video feed. HDCP copy protection must be disabled in the PS5 settings by navigating to Settings > System > HDMI > HDCP. To successfully disable HDCP, the PS5 must be connected directly to a TV or monitor. You cannot disable it while the console is routed through a capture card.
The most reliable way to monitor game audio without breaking the HDMI feed is to remove the console from the monitoring chain entirely. Plugging a headset directly into a computer allows users to monitor game audio via Elgato Studio or the OBS Studio preview. This method preserves the full-quality HDMI audio in the recording because the console still believes the HDMI out is the primary and sole audio destination.
Analog Bridging and Capture Card Hardware Limitations
Because consoles refuse to split audio digitally, capturing both your headset audio and the game feed requires specific hardware interventions.
The Elgato Chat Link serves as the primary bridge, but it is strictly an analog solution. The Elgato Chat Link only captures audio that is output directly from the controller via a 3.5mm cable. If you are using the Elgato Chat Link Pro, you need a computer running Windows 11 or macOS 14.2 Sonoma or later. The Chat Link Pro cable utilizes a very specific connector sequence: a male 4-pole 3.5mm jack for the PS4/PS5 controller, a female 4-pole 3.5mm port for your headset, and a male 3.5mm jack that runs to the capture card or the PC’s Line-In port.
Where you plug that final 3.5mm jack on your PC dictates whether the audio works or distorts. Connecting an analog audio cable to a PC’s Mic port instead of a Line-in port can cause issues because Mic ports use different voltages. Always use the Line-in port.
Capture cards handle these analog signals differently depending on their built-in ports and internal architecture. The Elgato Game Capture HD60 S and HD60 S+ feature dedicated analog audio input ports and can capture sound via HDMI or the analog port. The Elgato Game Capture HD60 and Elgato Game Capture HD60 S feature internal analog gain controls that can be adjusted between -12dB and +12dB, sitting at a default of 0dB.
However, internal PCIe capture cards generally strip away the analog 3.5mm ports entirely to save space on the I/O shield. The Elgato Game Capture HD60 Pro and the Elgato Game Capture 4K60 Pro (MK.1) lack 3.5mm analog ports. Capturing analog line-in sound from a desktop PC is required when using the Chat Link cable with these specific PCIe capture cards. The newer Elgato 4K Pro, which costs $250, captures at a maximum of 4K60 HDR with passthrough capabilities of 8K60 / 4K144, connects via PCIe x4, and uses Audio Input Capture in OBS.
External USB capture cards offer different specifications and audio routing paths. The Elgato HD60 X costs $150, has a max capture of 1080p60 / 4K30, passthrough of 4K60 HDR, connects via USB 3.0, and uses Audio Input Capture in OBS. The AVerMedia StreamLine MINI+ costs $75, has a max capture of 1080p60, passthrough of 4K60 HDR, connects via USB-C, and also uses Audio Input Capture in OBS. The Elgato Game Capture Neo costs $80, has a max capture of 1080p60, passthrough of 4K60, connects via USB-C, and uses Audio Input Capture in OBS.
For higher-end setups, the AVerMedia GC553G2 costs $180, has a max capture of 4K60, passthrough of 4K60 HDR, connects via USB 3.0, and uses a Custom Audio Device in OBS. If you are targeting higher fidelity audio, the AVerMedia GC553G2, GC575, and GC553Pro capture cards support multichannel 5.1 audio from the PS5 or Xbox Series X. The AVerMedia GC573 and GC570D capture cards support LPCM 5.1 audio from the Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, or Xbox Series X.
You must monitor how these cards handle multiple inputs. The AVerMedia GC553G2 and GC551G2 support only one audio input at a time, with the AUX input set as the default. Elgato Game Capture devices capture the Stereo PCM audio format. If you require advanced visual passthrough alongside your audio, the Elgato Game Capture 4K S supports 4K60 capture, HDR10, and VRR passthrough.
Forcing OBS Studio to Recognize the Signal
Once your hardware is wired correctly, OBS Studio must be configured to intercept and distribute the specific audio formats your capture card is feeding it.
Digital surround sound formats frequently break capture card audio processing. Setting a console’s audio output to PCM (stereo uncompressed) prevents silent audio in OBS caused by capture cards that cannot pass through Dolby Digital Plus. If your console attempts to push Dolby Digital Plus to a capture card that lacks the licensing or hardware decoder for it, the resulting OBS audio track will be completely silent.
How you add the audio source depends heavily on your capture card model and operating system. If you are using a PCIe capture card in OBS Studio, Chat Link audio is enabled by checking “Use Custom Audio Device” in the Video Capture Device properties and selecting the Line-in connection.
macOS users face an additional layer of manual configuration. When using the Cam Link 4K or Game Capture HD60 S+ in OBS Studio on macOS, audio capture does not happen automatically. It must be set manually via an Audio Input Capture source. If you recently altered your software environment and lost your audio routing, [verify exact details with official documentation] outlines the steps to verify these source targets.
Once the signal is inside OBS, the Audio Monitoring settings dictate exactly where the sound travels. Setting OBS Audio Monitoring to “Monitor Off” sends audio to the stream only, but not to your headphones. Setting OBS Audio Monitoring to “Monitor Only (Mute Output)” sends audio to your headphones, but not to the stream. Setting OBS Audio Monitoring to “Monitor and Output” sends audio to both your headphones and the stream.
Hardware bridging exists solely because console manufacturers refuse to give users basic control over their own digital audio streams.
